Ganapathy English Medium School

In the very heart of Mangaluru, housed in a fiery red stone heritage building stands the bustling, historic Ganapathy High School (GHS). Its mere mention invokes awe among its current students and cherished memories among the pass-outs.

Milestones

  • Our humble beginnings started in the Shri Umamaheshwara Temple in 1870.
  • Madras Presidency (which encompassed Mangalore then) recognized our institute and we were taken under its prescribed curriculum.
  • In 1909, we gave the institute its new identity of Ganapathy Secondary School. Back then, we were operating out of a ramshackle barrack-style building on Field Street.
  • We shifted to our current 2-acre campus at Hampankatta in 1915.
  • In 1918, we commenced a structured upgrade and achieved a High School status.
  • By 1924, influenced by British-style educational modernizations, we established a children’s block, co-education, scouts, and newer teaching systems.
  • With an increasing demand for English-medium education in Mangalore, Ganapathy English Medium School (GEMS) was started in 1989.
  • For a few years, Ganapathy High School and Ganapathy English Medium School were operating in parallel. Over time, the huge demand and popularity of English-medium education overpowered the local medium of instruction and led to a slow decline in admissions for the Kannada-medium Ganapathy High School.

Holistic development

  • As we were developing into an English medium school, we also introduced carpentry and weaving classes as part of crafts and vocational training. Our students even won certificates of merit in far-away places like the Trichur Exhibition.
  • On 1st June 1989, we inaugrated the English-medium Ganapathy English Medium School. We currently have classes from Nursery/KG to Xth standard.
  • We have laboratories for computer studies, physics, and chemistry.
  • GEMS also has a well-stocked library.
  • We take the safety and security of our students seriously and are meticulous about providing clean and hygienic toilets.
  • Our campus has well-maintained green spaces ensconced in landscaped gardens.
  • We host a lot of guest lectures.
  • For physical fitness, we offer sports facilities and yoga classes.
  • Students are encouraged to actively participate in outreach activities as a part of the focus on cultural, social, and moral awareness.
  • The Swachcha Mangaluru Abhiyan in 2016 saw the enthusiastic participation of 300 students and faculty over 10 consecutive Sundays, where they hit the road to give them an unprecedented clean-up.
  • The old bus stand and the railway station too got a sound scrubbing at the hands of an energetic student clean-up squad. Their efforts were greatly appreciated by the public at large and received wide coverage in the local media.
  • The school also celebrates events like Karnataka Rajyotasava Day and Independence Day with fervor.
  • In a step to encourage holistic development, students are offered the opportunity to learn music. The school endeavours to instil cultural values in the children through the celebration of various festivals.
  • On the academic front, the sincere and steadfast commitment of the school management and faculty has yielded spectacular results in the SSLC Examinations. Many laurels have been earned by students in sports and cultural activities too. A well-deserved stamp of approval from the Block Education Officer has been received for the School’s excellence on all fronts.
